The Open Sanctuary Project regularly researches and publishes articles with the intention of providing the most compassionate care for animals in a sanctuary or home environment. While we would prefer that all information comes from sources such as fellow sanctuary founders and caregivers as well as veterinary journals, due to the current state of animal agricultureThe human production and use of animals in order to produce animal products, typically for profit. and the general attitude of animals being viewed solely as commodities for human benefit, much of the research available on a wide variety of topics comes exclusively from non-compassionate sources. You can learn more about our sourcing considerations generally here.
At The Open Sanctuary Project, indicating Non-Compassionate Source means that the body publishing the information we are citing advocates for or condones the use of animals or substances that come from their bodies for human benefit. For example, a horse care source may advocate for horses to be raced, or a chicken care source may advocate for the human consumption of chicken eggs, or a goat care source may advocate for breeding.
While the data sourced may include elements of compassionate care, we believe that it’s important to note that we do not condone these sources’ views about animals and their role in the world. However, in the interest of transparency, we believe it is similarly important to cite the sources where we’ve gotten information from.
Has Your Resource Been Flagged?
If you are the author or provider of a resource that has been flagged on The Open Sanctuary Project as a non-compassionate source, and you believe it was flagged inappropriately by our standards, get in touch with us! We would be happy to have a discussion with you.
Because of the current state of animal agrculture, sometimes The Open Sanctuary Project may incidentally publish care information that is less compassionate than we strive to promote. In cases like these, please contact us immediately with your concerns so that we can issue a correction.
