With the many health complications that are associated with egg laying, it can be extremely helpful for sanctuaries to keep careful records for their egg laying residents. These can include records of implantation dates as well as implant serial numbers, notes with respect to egg composition, as well as notes concerning behavior associated with laying.

Keeping a record of implantation date can help serve as a reminder of when another implant is needed. Keeping track of an implant serial number can help when talking to your veterinarian in the case of implant failure.

In terms of egg composition, keeping notes with respect to whether an egg is soft, whether it is a “lash egg” (which are not really eggs but are rather caseous material, and serve as signs of reproductive illness), or whether it may be of an unusual size can also help track whether a resident may potentially be in need of veterinary attention.

If a resident is implanted and is showing behavior related to egg laying, such as “squatting” when being approached by a rooster or human, or is retreating to nesting boxes in anticipation of laying, then keeping track of those behaviors and the associated dates can help you to determine if it is time for another implant, and figure out how long your implants are lasting for this particular bird.

Having records like this consolidated in a fashion where you can easily provide them to your veterinarian can be extremely helpful when it comes to getting appropriate care for your egg laying residents. Consider trying either our paper or digital template below to track this information!
