SAFE (Sanctuaire pour animaux de ferme de l'Estrie) was founded in May of 2017 by Catherine Gagnieux when friends at Humane Society International (HSI) asked if she could take in three pigs who escaped from the truck that was taking them to the slaughterhouse. Those pigs became the first residents of this fledgling sanctuary. As of 2021, more than 50 non-human individuals now reside at SAFE, one of only two farm animal sanctuaries in Quebec.
